If you’ve ever been in a business class, chances are you’ll have done group presentations. Maybe you were lucky enough to be in groups that had clear leadership, but for the rest of us the chaos was real. You probably did everything your teacher told you to do—but did it actually work? The answer is no. Your teacher was given the wrong information. Do you want to do presentations in business class? How about in school? Yes, being in a group is good, but no, if the group doesn’t have anyone in charge. Let’s break down leadership types so you can understand why this matters. The top left quadrant consists of the most effective leaders because they are able to control their followers’ behavior. The top right quadrant includes poor leaders because they are unable to control their followers’ behavior. The bottom left quadrant is made up of followers who are easily led because these people prefer following others rather than setting anything in motion themselves. Finally, the bottom right quadrant consists of leaders who are easily led because they need other people to get things done. The ideal situation is when a leader can get followers to be effective and at the same time not too dominant. This means that a leader would have followers that can follow or not follow depending on how they’re feeling. If a group is going to be effective at any sort of activity, there needs to be a clear leadership role assigned. Studies show that if a group has no leader, there is low cohesion and high conflict among members. In addition to this, members do not take responsibility for the performance of their own work. If a leader isn’t taking charge of his or her group, you will notice the group missing deadlines, not doing work on time, and not working together. But what happens when there is no one in charge at all? Studies show that leaders of the group tend to be absent making it difficult to control behavior. In addition to this, the bossless group has low moral and low organization. If you’re in a bossless business class and your teacher is telling you that no one is in charge then it’s okay because that teacher was given incorrect information and doesn’t know how to advise students properly. The best way to make sure your group presentation isn’t chaotic is to assign roles. The person in charge should be the one who keeps everyone on track with the work. Members of the group should be assigned tasks that they are responsible for, and people in the group should fill different roles as needed based on their knowledge and experience. In a group presentation, there needs to be someone who knows how to effectively control others. This can include telling other members what they need to do as well as providing motivation and feedback for those other members. In addition, this leader needs to make sure that people are working together effectively. cfa1e77820
