Aachaarya is a nation of dancers. It has been the state of dance since the 8th century A.D., and this is due to its unique culture which never saw movement as a requirement for progress or achievement. In fact, every village has a dance school, and it is almost mandatory that every child learns at least one form of dance. Because of this, Bharat Natyam (the classical Indian dance) went on to become India’s National Dance and continues to evolve beautifully in tune with various forms of music and rhythms from different regions and cultures across India. When it was recognised as a national dance in 1976, the Kerala government sent a delegation to the Indian National Conference in Delhi to get it officially recognized, so that it could be taught in schools. Initially, this involved only the singing of the songs set to Indian folk tunes. However, over time, this evolved into a system where Bharat Natyam dancers learnt these famous classic songs and choreographed them into their own unique steps and sequences. The current even popularly known as "the world of Bharat".Bharat Natyam' is a classical Indian dance that comes from the state of Kerala on the southern Western coast of India . It was invented around the 8th century AD and is the oldest known classical dance of India. Bharat Natyam is one of the five classical dances of India (the others being Kathakali , Mohiniyattom, Kuchipudi and Odissi ) along with Kathak (Kathakali) which are more popular amongst millions of Indians living outside India. Natya Shastra is an ancient Indian book on dance, written during the Gupta period (c. sixth to eighth centuries AD). Natya Shastra is the oldest surviving text which deals with dance in any detail. It was written by Bharat Muni, who also called Natyashastra, probably during the 8th century CE. The Natya Shastra deals with different kinds of dances extensively and categorizes them into four kinds - "Varnam", "Lakshya", "Sharngam" and "Gagana". It also gives detailed steps for each of these kinds of dances. These are the most popular forms practiced in India today: The word 'Bharata' means 'of India'. The story of Bharat Natyam is essentially the story of Kerala. Kerala was formed as a 'state' on November 1, 1956. At that time, cities like Thiruvananthapuram , Kollam , Thrissur , Pullura and Kozhikode had already taken off as centres of fine arts. Dance forms like Kathakali, Mohiniyattom and Kuchipudi were already present in these cities. The state of Kerala still has four dance troupes - at Thiruvananthapuram , Alleppey , Thrissur and Cochin . cfa1e77820
